Luke 2:22-40 is filled with truth about Christ. We can learn about the humanity of Christ, the reason Christ was sent, the extent of Christ’s salvation reaching to the nations, an expectation that Christ will cause division, the need for the Holy Spirit to reveal Jesus, the power and role of the Holy Spirit, the need to patiently wait on the Lord, and much more. Through these truths, this passage is intended by God to sanctify us and equip us for every good work.
Luke does this by continuing to show us how God was sovereignly directing all the events surrounding the birth of Christ and by using faithful men and women around his birth to teach us about who this child is going to be. So, as we look at verses 22-40, we’re able to see 3 Truths about the birth of Jesus:
- Jesus was entrusted to faithful parents. (22-24, 39-40)
- Jesus is revealed by the Spirit and recognized by the faithful. (25-32, 36-38)
- Jesus will be a source of division. (33-35)
