John 1:1–18 invites us to see Christmas as both a sobering reminder of humanity’s sin and a breathtaking display of God’s grace. John begins by revealing the eternal glory of Christ, the Word who was with God, was God, and through whom all things were made, so we can grasp just how far Jesus condescended by taking on flesh. The problem, however, is that fallen humanity is spiritually blind, unable to recognize or receive the true Light even when he comes into the world he created. The good news is that Christ became flesh to rescue us, giving spiritual sight and the right to become children of God to all who believe, not by human effort but by God’s gracious intervention. In Jesus, we behold glory full of grace and truth, and from his fullness we receive grace upon grace.
- The Reality: The eternal glory of the Son of God. (1-5)
- The Problem: Fallen man is blinded to the glories of Christ. (6-11)
- The Solution: Christ became flesh to make us children of God. (12-18)
