Psalm 103

Psalm 103 is a hymn of praise written by David that calls God’s people to remember and celebrate His grace, mercy, and steadfast love. We as God’s people can suffer from “spiritual forgetfulness” just as the Israelites did during their exodus from Egypt where they saw God deliver them from the hands of Pharaoh. During their exodus, they saw God part the Red Sea, provide them with water when there was no water, and provide them with manna daily to sustain them. But they would quickly forget these blessings and begin to grumble and even turn their worship to a golden calf. We struggle with that same forgetfulness today, forgetting the good things that God has given us including our salvation, and we begin to focus on the challenges and disappointments that come our way, causing us to lose our gratitude, thankfulness, and worship of our Holy God. In this psalm, David calls us to remember four specific things:
- Remember God’s Personal Blessings (1-5)
- Remember God’s Compassionate Character (6-13)
- Remember our Frailty (14-18)
- Let Gratitude Lead us to Worship (19-22)
Someone once said that gratitude turns mirrors into windows. A mirror causes us to see ourselves; a window helps us see beyond ourselves. May Psalm 103 turn your mirror into a window that allows you to see beyond yourself and your problems and turn your focus to a window that allows you to see and remember God’s goodness, grace, mercy, and steadfast love for you!
