Luke 8:26-39
In Luke 8:26-39, Jesus engages a man possessed by many demons. They recognize him as the Son of the Most High God whose power is over them all. Jesus sets the man free from his bondage, restoring him to wholeness. The man responds with a desire to be with and listen to the one who rescued him. But the people of the region fear Jesus and want him to leave. Jesus does, but he leaves the man who was healed behind, that he might tell them the good news of all God had done for him. The Lord Jesus Christ has dominion over the evil spiritual realm and the hearts it enslaves. His power compels a response from us - either fear and rebellion or affection and service.
Jesus commands the evil spirits who destroy God’s image-bearers (26-33).
Jesus heals the broken with compassion and wholeness (34-35).
Jesus frightens the rebellious who have hard hearts (35-37).
Jesus commissions the redeemed to proclaim his glory (38-39).
