In Luke 10:38–42, we learn that following Jesus is not about choosing between serving and sitting, but about learning to serve from a posture of dependence on Christ. Martha’s busyness and anxiety reveal what happens when we become so consumed with doing good things that we lose sight of the One for whom and by whom we are laboring. Mary models the “good portion” by humbly sitting at the feet of Jesus, receiving his Word, and recognizing her need for Him. Jesus calls us to make prayer, His Word, and dependence upon him the necessary foundation for everything we do. Ultimately, the gospel reminds us that Jesus does not need our righteousness or good works, we need Him, and He graciously supplies the strength we need to serve for His glory.
