Luke 10:25-37
In Luke 10:25–37 Jesus’ interaction with the “wise and understanding” lawyer exposes the danger of self-righteousness and our desire to reduce God’s Law to something we can manage. The command to love God all the time with all we are and our neighbors as ourselves reveals a standard none of us can meet, showing us our desperate need for a Savior. Far from being a simple moral lesson on neighborly love, the Parable of the Good Samaritan reveals the impossible standard of God's Law and exposes our inability to earn eternal life through good works. Therefore, the passage calls us to abandon self-righteousness and throw ourselves completely on the mercy of Jesus Christ. Yet, when we trust in the work of Christ in our place, the Holy Spirit transforms us, empowering us to genuinely love and serve the neighbors God providentially places in our lives.
- The Key Question: What must I do to inherit eternal life? (25-26)
- The Straightforward Answer: Love God and love your neighbor. (27-28)
- The Self-justifying Response: Who is my neighbor? (29)
- The Convicting Parable: Be a merciful neighbor. (30-37)
