Hebrews 2:14-18 shows us the staggering reality of Christmas, that the Almighty appeared as a helpless human baby, causing us to ask why God had to take on flesh to save us. The Bible answers that there was no other way: Jesus partook in our flesh and blood specifically so He could die, thereby destroying the devil and delivering us from the slavery of the fear of death. As our faithful and merciful high priest, He offered His own life as a propitiation to satisfy God’s wrath, ensuring there is no condemnation left for those who trust in Him. Furthermore, because the eternal Son of God suffered and resisted temptation in His humanity, He does not stand at a distance but draws near to help us in our own struggles. Therefore, we can celebrate this season with freedom and awe, knowing that death is defeated, our debt is paid, and our Savior is ready to aid us in our pursuit of holiness.

  1. To destroy the devil and deliver us from fear of death. (14-16)
  2. To become our high priest and substitutionary sacrifice. (17)
  3. To help us when we are being tempted. (18)
