In this passage, we see Jesus marching resolutely to Jerusalem and explaining what it means to be great in the Kingdom of God. The disciples still believed that the Messiah would be a military king, who would free them from Roman oppression, and James and John wanted to be second and third in command in the new Kingdom. However, Jesus explained to them that greatness in the Kingdom comes through serving others. Jesus’ death on the cross modeled what it meant to serve others. May we exhibit that same humility and servant’s heart toward others in our own lives.
